Surfing El Porto: Manhattan Beach's Most Consistent Break

El Porto is the north end of Manhattan Beach and one of the most consistent beach breaks in Los Angeles. An underwater canyon funnels swell toward the sand here, so El Porto picks up more energy than the beaches around it — there is almost always something to ride.

Peaks shift along the sandbars, spreading crowds out more than a single-takeoff point break.

Winter northwest swells bring the most size and the fastest, punchier waves. Summer south swells are mellower and friendlier to longboards and beginners.

Mornings are best year-round — cleanest conditions before the afternoon onshore wind. A wetsuit is standard: full suit in winter, spring suit or full in summer depending on the year.

Parking lots sit right off Highland Avenue at the beach; they fill early on good days — one more reason staying a two-minute walk away beats driving in.

Check the surf report the night before, paddle out early, and respect the lineup: El Porto is friendly, but it is a local's wave at dawn.
